Cases of Zika-related microcephaly decrease in Brazil

RIO DE JANEIRO, July 5 (Xinhua) -- The number of microcephaly cases caused by the Zika virus in Brazil has fallen, with 322 cases confirmed by May 20 among newborns, the Brazilian Ministry of Health said on Wednesday.

The data shows that while new cases are still being reported, the sufferers declined year over year.

Due to the Zika epidemic and the resulting surge of microcephaly cases, Brazil declared a national health emergency in November 2015.

According to the ministry of health, the disease has also caused 30 deaths of unborn infants so far in 2017.

The majority of confirmed cases occurred in the states of Rio de Janeiro, Bahia, Goias and Sao Paulo.
