Feature: Cirque Eloize's iD returns to thrill the audiences

By Ma Yujie

SINGAPORE, Feb. 26 (Xinhua) -- Cirque Eloize's iD, a blend of circus arts and urban dance by the sister company of the world renowned Cirque du Soleil, has returned to Singapore with its stunning skills Friday night.

Set against an urban backdrop, iD transports the audience into the vibrant streets at the heart of a big city. The stage comes alive with the boundless energy of acrobats, break dancers, contortionists and a fearless stunt biker who perform against a kaleidoscope of eye-popping multimedia elements drawn from science-fiction films, comic books and graffiti.

Since iD began touring in 2010, it received rave reviews from the public and critics alike. During its debut, the crowd broke into cheers and "wows" throughout the show.

"In keeping with the company's tradition, with iD we've again combined different art forms - this time urban dance - gangs, sharing a public place at the heart of a city, and seeking to express their identity and individuality, and you have iD," said the show's director, Jeannot Painchaud.

15 world class stage performers combined with ten circus disciplines this time provided for a spectacular, high-energy production blending jaw dropping acrobatics, hip hop and street dance into one show.

Thibaut Philippe has been with the show since it debuts. Now 30, he has begun practicing his 26-inch trial bike since he was 14. During the show, he performs unbelievable skills such as rope skipping and rock climbing, of course, all with his beloved bike.

During the show, he has also invited a guest from the audiences and astonished him and all those present while using his bike to jump over each part of the man's body.

With new blood joining in, the show updates every time it meets the audiences. Diana Gonzalez, a 28 year-old lady born in Mexico, has just joined the show last year. She said that each performer needs to go through multiple procedures before they can bring their own techniques on stage.

"We have to do the auditions, and sometimes we go rehearsal with the company, and you do interviews with the owner, the artistic director, and the acrobatic director, to know if you're in, and your technique will fit in the show," she told Xinhua.

And that is also what stimulates the audiences each time it comes back.

"Everybody that joins in brings their own techniques, their own capacities, so the show changes to what it happens in 2010 to right now," Gonzalez said.

And even as a skilled performer, there's always new challenges waiting ahead.

"There is always room for improvement, even if you already have a number. In your performance, there are always new things to try and new tricks to get. So, yeah, there's always improvement," she said.

The show will be on from Feb. 26 to March 6 on each Fridays and Weekends at the MasterCard Theaters at Singapore's iconic Marina Bay Sands.
